Metal prices today

The value of a catalytic converter follows precious metal prices. Here you can see today's spot prices in euro – and how we turn them into an offer.

Valuation

From market price to converter price

Simplified, the metal value of a lot results from three figures. Processing and refining costs are then deducted.

Metal value = ceramic weight × content (ppm) × price (€/g)

Ceramic weight
Weight of the monolith without the shell, determined after decanning.
Content (ppm)
Parts per million – grams of precious metal per tonne of ceramic, determined by assay.
Price (€/g)
Spot price in euro per gram; 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 g.
Payable rate
Share of the metal value paid out after refining and processing – stated in the offer.

Market

The three metals

78Pt

Platinum

Platinum resists corrosion and is highly active as a catalyst. In vehicles it is found mainly in diesel oxidation catalysts and coated particulate filters. Its price depends strongly on industrial and jewellery demand.

46Pd

Palladium

Palladium has largely replaced platinum in petrol converters and is now the most important precious metal there by volume. Its price reacts sensitively to news from the car industry and mining.

45Rh

Rhodium

Rhodium is used only in very small amounts but converts nitrogen oxides particularly efficiently. The market is small and the price therefore very volatile.

Why converter prices fluctuate

  1. 1
Market prices. Platinum, palladium and rhodium are traded worldwide; their prices change every day.
  2. 2
Exchange rate. The metals are quoted in US dollars – a weaker or stronger euro changes the value.
  3. 3
Demand. Car production, emission standards and the share of electric vehicles influence demand.
  4. 4
Supply. Mining in a handful of countries and the amount of recycled metal determine how scarce the material is.
